Balmain Football Club Trial of Youth Team Selection Policy
Balmain Football Club is a community oriented sports club that believes in promoting participation in our game, equal opportunity for all players, development of football and team skills, and above all, enjoyment of the game.

The club recognises that players and their parents have a variety of motives in playing football and subsequently possess different levels of aptitude and interest in the game dependent on their background, experiences, playing ability and age.

This is the first time Balmain Football Club has implemented a documented selection policy to its members. The process has been designed to be fully transparent to all and will be conducted by selectors who are independent of the players.

It has been agreed that the selection process will be trialled on those who are interested for the U/10 – 12 Boys and U/12 – 14 Girls age groups for the 2010 season.

The Trial is an attempt to place players in a division and team that is appropriate to their level of skill development and general interest in the game.  It allows players to play at a level appropriate to their ability and aspirations to ensure they gain maximum enjoyment and development both as players and as individuals.

While the Club encourages all players in the target age groups to take part in the team selection process, it is not compulsory.  As a club, we are aware that team selection is “not for everybody” and we will provide opportunities for all players who wish to participate and be involved in the game, be it at a purely social / recreational level or at a more competitive level.  The club will however, endeavour to place / assess suitable players / teams in division 1, 2 etc to represent the club at the highest level of the Canterbury Association.

We encourage everyone to read it - we are aware that some will have negative feelings towards the idea based on previous experiences or on how the process is undertaken at other clubs, and hope that it reassures anyone with misgivings about how the team selection process will be run at Balmain.
